After reading When Extreme Banting is Just (maybe) Not for You, I was prompted to write about falling off of the wagon.
We have found that living the low carb lifestyle has been a cinch. In fact not too different from the way we used to eat, when we still ate ‘normally’. ?
We are all human beings and sometimes we feel the need to fall off of the so called ‘Banting wagon’ and indulge in a delicious pastry or big slice of bread smothered in jam, yes alas, we are still human beings…
My biggest craving in the past was for Kentucky fried Chicken (KFC), but having made a serious mental note of just how terrible I felt after indulging in our once favourite fast food, I can quite confidently say that this food is no longer at the top of my illicit foods list – my children don’t quite yet agree.
We follow the 80/20 rule – where we aim for 100% pure low carb, high fat food, but we don’t beat ourselves up if we don’t achieve the perfect 100%.
There are definite benefits to maintaining the 100% goal, these would include:
- No chance of the dreaded allergies returning to haunt you (Sinus, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), headache and a complete lack of energy)
- Remaining in the fat burning ketosis.
By breaking the 100% rule, you may find that it is extremely difficult to get your ketones back to your ‘pre-cheat’ ketone level, sometimes taking anything from 3 days to correct, but it is attainable and you can correct the temporary discomforts which have be brought about.
What to do during holiday, relaxation time?
You try your best to remain low carb, but sometimes, particularly over December, there are far too many festive temptations in the way and it becomes difficult to dodge the Christmas pudding, cocktails or the over indulgence of the gorgeous Summer fruits.
Well that was last December – the kg’s arrive, but your body has become a well oiled machine and you will find that the weight literally falls off, as fast as it arrives. Don’t fear, you will find it extremely easy to go back to how you were eating in November, by the time January and the old routine arrives again. All that will be required is a little discipline – once you start upping your fat levels and minimising the carbohydrates, you will be well on track to losing your indulgent cravings. You will soon start to see the great health benefits and the compliments will start flooding in when the kg’s begin to fall off again.
